Organisms

What would Charles Darwin, Carl Linnaeus, Emma Kisling or Stella Ross-Craig have used to track their observations of nature if they'd been born in 1994? My bet is iNaturalist.

On this website, you can view millions of observations by people around the world, including over 1,000 of mine (under the username gecko1). It allows you to crowd-source species identifications, drawing on the vast knowledge and generosity of internet-connected humans everywhere. My favorite feature is the phylogeny, where you can view your "life list" of organisms in the beautiful tree of their evolutionary history.

While you're there, try making an account for yourself and uploading a photo you've taken of any flower, snail, bird, bug or other living thing. Watch out... it's addictive!
